Individual Research Projects

High school and college students can complete individual research projects in the RSC laboratories with direction from RSC staff. Students have access to state of the art equipment and laboratories, as well as insight from the experienced RSC team. Projects may be completed to meet requirements of classes, for Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science, and for more experience during internships and mentorships.

Jess Briggs, McDowell High School

Jess Briggs completed a mentorship at the RSC where she used her newfound laboratory and field skills to conduct an individual research project. Her project focused on the water quality, bacteria, and algal presence at Vista 3 on Presque Isle State Park from January to March of 2017. This experience was invaluable during her recent college interviews. She has gone on to Penn State Main Campus where she was accepted into the Schreyer Honors College. Way to go, Jess!

Jay Fonticella, Fairview High School

Jay, senior at Fairview high school, came to the RSC to complete an experiment for the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science competition. His project used flow cytometry to measure the lipid concentrations of Scenedesmus sp. of algae in the presence of varying concentrations of ferric ions. His experiment was interesting and inquisitive, and the RSC was happy to help him learn new skills along the way! Jay will present at the regional PJAS competition in January.
